Lock down project – Replacement assignment internship

"Blijf in u kot!"

That's the message we got in March 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, AP University College in Antwerp was forced to cancel all internships. The teachers had to put together a new assignment in a short period of time.

We got the assignment to contact a VZW (non-profit organization) and offer our graphic skills to them. Together with two other fellow students, Emma Broos (2nd year of crossmedia) and Brent Nicolaes (2nd year of Graphic Media Technology), we chose the film house Klappei.

Here you can see what we realized, and who did what..

The new logo

The logo was an enormous challenge for us as a group to design. Klappei's expectations of the logo were extremely high. The fact that Klappei wanted a logo that looked 'freshly modern' but radiated authenticity and character did not make it any easier. The final logo is a combination of all our best ideas; you will find a touch of each group member. Before we came to this result, we brainstormed extensively and made countless sketches. For the final logo, we put our heads together during a team meeting of four and a half hours. During this session, we made sketches and gathered inspiration. We only stopped when we had a result we were proud of.

The final logo consists of 2 parts, a camera and a text balloon. These parts represent the dual mission of Klappei. The camera stands for the film programming that is central to the Klappei. The balls on the camera can be seen as film reels, but also as two people, which stands for the coming together of people. The speech bubble focuses on the social aspect of the Klappei: Klappei as a place where people come together for a chat.

Poster

The current Posters are a collection of a dozen film posters, supplemented with some practical information. These posters are very busy and cluttered. Starting from this point I started designing: how do I get all this information on less chaotic posters? I split up the programme components and designed one poster per one or two programmes.

This with the aim of distributing posters in a more targeted way. For example, it is possible to hang the Kids@Klappei posters in a school environment. Visually, the posters have a selection of only 4 film stills on which a character is always central, to highlight the social aspect of the Klappei.

Website

For the website, it was important that the different services of Klappei were discussed. Every page had to contain the right information. ‘Programme’, 'Rent the venue and 'Contact' are the most important pages for visitors, but the 'About us' page with information about the film house could not be missing. I chose this structure after an analysis of the old website. To come to a concrete wireframe, I summarized everything with the person in charge of the current website.

I opted for a modern, fresh look in which the content is clearly subdivided. Also - in contrast to the old website - there are clear buttons and call to actions so that the visitor knows how to get to other pages. The colours and style elements are also in line with the branding. For example, the indicated colours of the film categories are used, as well as the slanting lines that can be found throughout all our designs.

Due to the transition period from film house to community centre, new content had to appear on the website. It was a challenge to create a complete, functional website in such a short time. I learned a lot about how WordPress works.

Social media

The design of the social media posts are in line with the corporate identity. For example, the programme colour codes and the slanted line also appear here. I chose to create a message per film/activity, in contrast to the old designs. This gives a clearer picture of the programming.
The film, bar and origami icons also appear in these designs. These provide a good indication of the different activities of Klappei.

Brochure

The current brochure needed a new and fresh look. The bundle had an elongated format, with repetitive images and text. In the current brochure they had made a distinction between adult and children's programming. The children's programme could be found at the back of the brochure. I did some research into the different formats available for brochures and got inspiration from other non-profit organisations. In the end, I came to the decision to take a landscape A5 format so that the brochure becomes a booklet, so that people can browse through it quietly.

In order to make a clear visual distinction between the different film series, we gave each series a different colour. For example, there are coloured bars on the left and right margins of the brochure that show which series the film belongs to. The visual material in the brochure consists of film shots with the main characters, to accentuate the social aspect of Klappei.

Because the non-profit organisation (filmhuis Klappei) is in a transition period from film house to community centre, and is expanding its activities, I proposed to place different activities for young and old in the brochure. For example, I added craft afternoons and evenings, lectures and tastings, ... in the brochure.

We also integrated the house style in the 10-event card. In this way you have the slanted line that is present in all media, and the film camera from the logo can also be seen on the card. At the back are 10 small film cameras, 1 for each turn. You can tick the 10 turn card with either a stamp with the new logo or simply tick with a biro.

Thanks

We would like to thank Filmhuis Klappei for giving us the opportunity to develop a new corporate identity for them. In this way we have learned to deal with the client, his wishes, value and standards.

Besides that, we would also like to thank the AP University College for giving us this instructive experience and giving us a hint of the work field.

Finally, we would also like to thank our friends and family for their support.
